How long it takes
Most repairs are a one-day job. Texture matching or a ceiling that is still wet adds a day, because it has to dry before it gets closed up.
What moves the number
- How much board is actually affected. A fist-sized hole and a failed ceiling section are different jobs.
- Whether the surface is textured. Matching an existing texture takes longer than a flat finish and is the part most people notice if it is done badly.
- Whether it is still wet. If water is involved the cause gets fixed and the cavity dries before anything is closed up, which adds days rather than money.
- The age of the house. Pre-1978 means the lead rules apply once enough paint is disturbed.
