What we do

Handyman repairs through to remodeling, from one company. Anything with a page behind it has the checkable detail on it — permits, code, what moves the price. Need something that is not on this list? Ask, and if it is not our work we will tell you straight rather than learn on your house.

Water damage & roofing

The urgent end. A leak upstairs is a ceiling, a floor and a paint job downstairs.

Walls & ceilings

Drywall from a fist-sized hole to a re-hung ceiling, and the paint that goes over it.

Floors

Wood, laminate, vinyl and tile — on a subfloor that has been measured first.

Decks & fences

The outdoor structures this climate is hardest on, and the ones the code cares about.

Small jobs & assembly

The list on the fridge. No job too small — if it is a half hour, it is still a job.

Maintenance & remodeling

The annual once-over, and the bigger job when you are ready for it.

What it costs

You get the price before we start.

  • We quote the job, not an hourly rate.
  • The number you agree to is the number you pay, unless the job itself changes.
  • No trip fee inside 25 miles.

Ask what your job is likely to run and we will tell you straight, before anyone comes out.

Where we work

Tuscaloosa and 60 miles around it. Further out costs a trip fee, and we would rather you saw it here than on the invoice.

Real county lines. The shaded area is everywhere inside 60 miles of Tuscaloosa; the rings are 25, 45, 60 miles out.

  • 0-25 miles No trip fee
  • 25-45 miles $65
  • 45-60 miles $110

25 counties are at least partly inside that radius — Tuscaloosa, Hale, Pickens, Greene, Bibb, Fayette, Jefferson, Perry, Walker, Lamar, Shelby, Sumter, Chilton, Dallas, Marengo, Marion, Autauga, Cullman, Winston, Blount in Alabama, and Noxubee, Lowndes, Kemper, Monroe, Clay across the Mississippi line. Some of those are clipped by it rather than covered end to end, which is what the shading shows.

How you get a price

  1. Send photos. Send photos with the form and you get a range the same business day, usually without anyone needing to drive out. That is faster for you, and it is why the form asks for pictures.
  2. We come out when the job needs it. Some jobs cannot be judged from a photo. Anything structural, anything still wet, decks, and whole-house work get looked at in person before we put a number on them.
  3. Then you get a firm number, in writing. No charge to come out inside 25 miles. Past that the trip fee above applies, and it comes off the job if you book it.

Straight answers

The questions we get asked most, answered properly rather than with “it depends”.

Do I need a permit to repair a deck in Tuscaloosa?

Yes. The city lists “Deck (New or Repair)” as work that needs a building permit, so a repair is not exempt the way painting is. Ask us and we will tell you straight what your job needs.

Do I need a permit to paint inside?

No. Tuscaloosa lists painting, carpet and trim work by name as work that does not need a permit. If the job turns into opening up or moving a wall, that becomes a Residential Interior Alteration, and that does.

Does my fence need a permit?

Only if it is over 7 feet tall. Standard residential privacy fence heights fall under that line.

What does a permit cost?

For residential work, Tuscaloosa works it out as the job’s valuation divided by 1,000, times $3.50. Commercial is a different rate — valuation divided by 1,000, times $12.21. Most residential permits are processed within 24 to 48 hours, and everything is reviewed against the 2021 ICC codes. There is no minimum permit fee; the only flat fees are demolition, at $21 residential and $26 commercial.

Do you come out to look before quoting?

For most jobs we do not need to. Send photos with the form and you get a range the same business day, without waiting on an appointment. When a job cannot be judged from a picture — anything structural, anything still wet, decks, whole-house work — we come and look before putting a number on it. No charge inside 25 miles.

Do you charge to come out?

No trip fee inside 25 miles of Tuscaloosa. 25 to 45 miles is $65 and 45 to 60 miles is $110. The trip fee is waived on any job over $1,500.

How do you price the work?

We quote the job, not an hourly rate. You get the number before we start, and it does not move unless the job itself changes.

My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?

It can. Federal rules cover paid work that disturbs paint in pre-1978 homes, and Alabama runs its own certified program through the Department of Public Health rather than the federal one. Small work under six square feet of paint in a room is exempt — but separate jobs in the same room within 30 days count as one, and window replacement never qualifies.

When can I reach you?

The office runs Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. We are closed Sunday. If it is water or damage, call and we get back to you within 2 hours, any day including Sunday. For anything else, send the form whenever suits you — it lands in the same inbox and you get a real answer the same business day.

Does my job need a licensed contractor in Alabama?

It depends on the size of the job, not the trade. Alabama’s Home Builders Licensure Board requires a State Home Builders license for residential work where the cost of the undertaking exceeds $10,000, and for residential roofing where it exceeds $2,500 — a much lower bar than most people expect. Worth asking any contractor before you sign, and worth knowing that the $100,000 figure you may have read applies to the separate commercial general contractor board, not to work on your house. We take the call, quote the job, and stay responsible for it start to finish; where a job needs a license holder it is performed by one.
