Same river, different rulebook. Northport permits its own work, adopts its own code editions, and applies its permit rule further than most people expect.

Northport is not Tuscaloosa, for permits
This is the part that catches people out, and it is worth understanding before anyone starts work on your house.
- Northport issues its own permits. The city runs its own Planning and Inspections Department, so a permit for work in Northport comes from Northport, not from the City of Tuscaloosa — even though the two sit on opposite banks of the same river. source
- The rule reaches past the city limits. With a few exceptions, all new construction and alterations within the city limits or the police jurisdiction require a permit. A property with a Northport mailing address that sits outside the city line can still need one, so “I am not technically in Northport” is not the end of the question. source
- Repairs have their own code. Northport enforces the 2021 International Existing Building Code alongside the 2021 International Residential Code. The IEBC is the one written for alterations and repairs to buildings that are already standing, which is what almost all of our work is. source
- Rentals have their own code too. The 2021 International Property Maintenance Code is enforced here, and it is the one that matters on a landlord turnover rather than to an owner living in the house. source
- Electrical is a different edition year. Northport is on the 2020 National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) while the rest of its adopted codes are the 2021 ICC family. Anyone who tells you they “work to the 2021 codes” across the board is not being precise about the electrical side. source
- Who to actually ask. Permit questions and inspection requests go to the Chief Building Official on 205-333-3027, or Inspections@northportal.gov. That is a different number from the Planning department’s main line. source
- Its own zoning ordinance. Northport maintains zoning separately from the county and from Tuscaloosa, currently amended through May 18, 2026 — so a setback or an accessory-structure rule you read for Tuscaloosa does not carry across the river. source

We have deliberately not published a permit fee figure for Northport: the schedule is not posted in a form we could verify, and it has been under review, so a number here would be worse than no number.
What that means for the work
Most repair work does not need a permit in either city. The difference shows up on the jobs that do.
Drywall & ceilings
Patching, texture matching and water-damaged ceilings do not normally pull a permit. If a ceiling came down because something structural moved, that is a different conversation and the IEBC is where it gets had.
Decks & fences
This is where the permit question actually bites, and where the police-jurisdiction rule catches people who assumed they were outside the city.
Interior painting
No permit. But if the house predates 1978 the federal lead rules apply on this side of the river exactly as they do on the other. source

How you get a price
- Send photos. Send photos with the form and you get a range the same business day, usually without anyone needing to drive out. That is faster for you, and it is why the form asks for pictures.

Does Northport issue its own building permits?
Yes. Northport runs its own Planning and Inspections Department, so work in Northport is permitted by Northport rather than by the City of Tuscaloosa. The two cities face each other across the river and have separate rulebooks.
I have a Northport address but I am outside the city limits. Do I still need a permit?
Possibly. Northport applies its permit requirement to the police jurisdiction as well as the city limits, so being outside the line is not on its own an answer. The Chief Building Official on 205-333-3027 will tell you which side of it your address falls.
