The 6-square-foot indoor exemption comes with a clause most people never reach: “jobs, other than emergency renovations, performed in the same room within the same 30 days must be considered the same job.” Three separate small patches in one room inside a month are one renovation for the purposes of the rule, and they are measured together. source

What moves the number
- How many jobs, and whether they are near each other. Six things in one house on one visit costs far less per item than six visits.
- Whether any of them is secretly a permitted job. Swapping a fixture is not. Running a new circuit or replacing a water heater is, and the city cares which.
- What we find. A small repair that turns out to be covering a leak stops being a small repair, and we would rather tell you that than paint over it.
- Parts. If it is a part we carry, it is on the truck. If it is a part that has to be matched to something from 1974, that is a trip.
