Water damage repair in Tuscaloosa
A leak becomes a repair job in hours, not weeks. What matters first is what comes out, what can be dried, and how fast somebody actually looks at it.
This is the one thing on this site we treat as urgent. Water or damage: we call you back within 2 hours, any day. Not because it is a good sales line — because the clock below is real and it is short.
The clock, and what it actually says
Checkable facts from the EPA, with sources. This is the part most contractors paraphrase and get slightly wrong.
- 24 to 48 hours. The EPA’s wording is that it is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth. source
- It is a guideline, not a deadline. The EPA says plainly that mold growth will not always occur after 48 hours. Anyone telling you a house is definitely ruined at hour 49 is selling something. source
- About 10 square feet — roughly a 3ft by 3ft patch — is the EPA’s line for handling mold yourself. Under it, most people can. Over it, get somebody in. source
- 0–24h — Act Extract, dehumidify, get air moving
- 24–48h — Window closing EPA: dry within 24-48 hours
- 48–72h — Past the guideline Not automatic — but assume opening up
- Keep the house under 60% relative humidity, ideally between 30% and 50%. That is the EPA’s number for keeping mold from taking hold in the first place, and in an Alabama summer it means the air conditioning is doing the drying, not an open window. source
What comes out and what can be dried
The EPA publishes this material by material for anything wet less than 48 hours. It decides most of what a water damage job costs, so it is worth reading before anyone quotes you.
| Material | What the EPA says |
|---|---|
| Wallboard (drywall) | May be dried in place if there is no obvious swelling and the seams are intact. If not, remove, discard and replace. |
| Fiberglass insulation | Discard and replace. |
| Ceiling tiles | Discard and replace. |
| Carpet and backing | Extract the water, drop the humidity with a dehumidifier, speed the drying with fans. |
| Wood surfaces | Remove moisture immediately; dehumidifiers, gentle heat and fans. |
| Hard non-porous surfaces | Vacuum or damp wipe with water and mild detergent, allow to dry, scrub if needed. |

The practical version: swelling and open seams are the test on drywall. Wet insulation and wet ceiling tiles are not a judgement call — they go. That is why a ceiling leak so often turns into more work than the stain suggests.
Why it is usually more than one trade
Water does not respect the boundary between jobs, which is the whole argument for one company handling it.
Ceilings and walls
Cut out what has gone, replace, and match the texture so the repair does not read as a patch.
Floors
What is underneath has to be dry before anything new goes down, and that is measured rather than guessed.
Paint after
A stain will ghost through ordinary paint. Sealing it first is the difference between fixed and fixed-looking.
Permits, and the two cases that need one
Most water damage repair does not pull a permit. Patching drywall, replacing flooring and painting are not permitted work in Tuscaloosa. Two things change that: structural work, if the water reached framing or a joist, and moving plumbing rather than repairing what is there.
Where a permit is involved, Tuscaloosa works the RESIDENTIAL fee out as the job’s valuation divided by 1,000, times $3.50 — commercial is charged at $12.21 per $1,000 — and most residential permits are processed within 24 to 48 hours against the 2021 ICC codes. source If the property is in Northport, none of that applies — it is a separate jurisdiction with its own department and its own adopted codes.
What it costs
We are not publishing a range on this one, and the reason is not evasiveness.
Water damage is the job where a published figure would mislead most people who read it. The same stained ceiling is a half-day patch or two weeks of work depending on what is above it, how long it was wet, whether the insulation went, and whether anything structural got involved — and none of that is visible in the photo that made you call. A range wide enough to be honest would be too wide to be useful.
So: send photos, tell us what happened and roughly when, and you get a real number from a person. Some jobs cannot be judged from a photo. Anything structural, anything still wet, decks, and whole-house work get looked at in person before we put a number on them. No charge to come out inside 25 miles. Past that the trip fee above applies, and it comes off the job if you book it.
About the permit and regulatory information. Current as of August 2026 and offered as general guidance, not legal, code or compliance advice. Requirements change, and how they apply depends on the specifics of your property and your job. Confirm anything you plan to rely on with the City of Tuscaloosa Building & Inspections, or the relevant agency, before acting on it.
Straight answers
How quickly does water damage need to be dealt with?
The EPA puts it at 24 to 48 hours: dry water-damaged areas and items inside that window to prevent mold growth. It is a guideline rather than a deadline — the EPA says mold growth will not always occur after 48 hours — but it is the right clock to work to, and it is why water is the one thing we call back on within 2 hours, any day.
Does wet drywall always have to be replaced?
No. The EPA guidance is that wallboard wet for under 48 hours may be dried in place if there is no obvious swelling and the seams are intact. If it has swelled or the seams have gone, it comes out. Wet fiberglass insulation and wet ceiling tiles are discard-and-replace either way.
How big does the damage have to be before it needs a professional?
The EPA line is about 10 square feet — roughly a 3ft by 3ft patch. Under that, most people can handle it themselves. Over it, get somebody in. That is about the mold, not the repair; a small patch of mold on a wall that is structurally fine is a different job from a ceiling that came down.
Do I need a permit to repair water damage?
Usually not. Drywall patching, flooring and painting do not pull a permit in Tuscaloosa. If the water reached something structural, or the repair means moving plumbing, that changes and the permit rules apply. We will tell you which one you are in before anything starts.
