What moves the number
- What is under it. Floor rigidity gets checked before anything is set, because a floor that flexes cracks grout no matter how good the tile work is. If it needs stiffening, that is the real job.
- Tile size and material. Large-format and natural stone are less forgiving of a substrate than small ceramic, and they take longer to set flat.
- Layout and cuts. A running bond in a square room is fast. Diagonals, borders, niches and anything meeting a curve is slow, and the cuts are where the time goes.
- Whether plumbing moves. Tile needs no permit in Tuscaloosa; moving a drain does. If the layout changes, the permitted work happens first.
- What is behind a shower wall once it is open. On a wet wall that is genuinely unknown until the tile comes off, which is why it gets looked at before a number is given.
